Originating from Baltimore, Maryland, Oloye Balogun Sango USA (Oguntolu Ifatoki Sangorinu Ojeyinka Osunmurewa Fabunmi Akinlana) has dedicated his life to the preservation and promotion of African spirituality, culture, and humanitarian efforts. His 10 years of service as a flight crew member in the U.S. Air Force during the 1970s exposed him to the rich cultural and political landscapes of Africa, particularly in Kenya, Nigeria, Niger, and South Africa during the height of apartheid. Witnessing firsthand the brutal realities of systemic oppression deeply shaped his future work, vision, and unwavering commitment to ancestral traditions and Pan-Africanist principles.
Today, Oloye Balogun Sango USA approaches his humanitarian work with a Pan-Africanist spirit, tirelessly striving to awaken and inspire a global community of changemakers dedicated to advancing the independence and empowerment of the African continent in all spheres.
His spiritual journey began with his initiation to Ogun in 1980 while still in the military—a decision that led to religious persecution by his superiors, though ultimately dismissed by military headquarters. In 1992, he was initiated into Ifa, marking a pivotal chapter in his life. A year later, in 1993, he met the late Araba of Osogbo, Oloye Afolabi Fabunmi, who became his spiritual father through adoption. In 1994, he crossed paths with the renowned Awise Agbaye, Professor Wande Abimbola, to whom he expressed his desire to relocate from Tampa, Florida, to Atlanta, Georgia, to establish an Ifa temple. This vision materialized as Ile Ori Ifa Temple, the first of its kind in Atlanta, focused on the philosophy and traditions of Ifa as practiced in Yorubaland. This effort laid the foundation for the growth of the Isese community in Atlanta.
In 2000, following the transition of the Araba of Osogbo, Oloye Balogun Sango received a spiritual visitation from his mentor in a dream, during which he was bestowed the title of Balogun Sango. On July 20, 2023, in a remarkable development, he was officially coronated as Balogun Sango USA by the Adosu Sango Olorisa Worldwide, shortly after his formal initiation into the sacred mysteries of Sango.
Oloye Balogun Sango USA’s extensive spiritual initiations also include:
• Egungun Initiation
• Initiation into the Zulu Sangoma tradition (2008)
• Initiation into Kriya Yoga (2005)
Co-founder of 3Good Heart Foundation (now known as Aredu Trust Foundation).
The Office of the Bologun and its cabinet of 5 coronated Oloyes directly funds programs for people with disabilities and scholarships for primary school students in Nigeria, Ghana, and indigenous people in the Philippines.
Oloye Balogun Sango USA continues to stand as a beacon of cultural resilience, spiritual leadership, and Pan-African advocacy, dedicated to leaving a legacy of empowerment and transformation for generations to come.
